Councillor David Taylor, the Ulster Unionist Party’s Newry & Armagh candidate in the forthcoming Assembly Election, has called on the Communities Minister to reverse her decision not to distribute the long overdue £36M Sub-Regional Stadia Programme funding for local football.
Councillor David Taylor said:
“The announcement by the Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey was a shocking way to treat local football clubs and supporters. The Sub-Regional Stadia Programme was first approved by the Executive in 2011 and the fact the money – and we are talking about £36M here – has still not been allocated, is little short of a disgrace.
“Football facilities across Northern Ireland are in dire need of upgrading and local clubs in the Newry & Armagh Constituency would be able to make good use of any funding they could access via the programme.
“Clubs and fans deserve and need upgraded facilities to meet the requirements of the 21st Century. This funding was promised to clubs over a decade ago and the amount of delay and prevarication has been quite unbelievable.
“Local football clubs and fans deserve better and the Minister needs to reconsider, reverse her decision and get this sorted as a matter of urgency.”
