Locals First Initiative Urges Councillors to Do the Right Thing – Withdraw from the City and District of Sanctuary Network
The Locals First Initiative is calling on every councillor in Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to do the right thing and vote to withdraw from the City and District of Sanctuary network.
For too long, local people have felt ignored while their concerns about housing, public services, infrastructure and community cohesion have been overlooked. The council’s first responsibility is to the people who live, work and pay rates in this district. That responsibility should always come before symbolic political commitments.
Newry, Mourne and Down is a unique border district facing unique challenges. With continuing uncertainty surrounding migration policy and the potential implications for border communities, now is not the time to remain part of a network that many residents believe sends the wrong message about the council’s priorities.
This is not about turning our backs on compassion. Our district has a proud tradition of helping those in genuine need. Compassion and common sense are not mutually exclusive. However, compassion must be balanced with responsibility, transparency and a commitment to protecting the interests of local communities.
The City and District of Sanctuary network has become a source of division rather than unity. Instead of bringing communities together, it has created uncertainty and undermined public confidence in the council’s decision-making.
Councillors now have the opportunity to put that right.
By voting to withdraw from the network, they can demonstrate that they have listened to the concerns of their constituents and are prepared to put local people first. It would send a clear message that Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s priority is delivering for the communities it serves.
The Locals First Initiative urges every councillor, regardless of political affiliation, to stand with the people who elected them. This is an opportunity to restore public confidence, refocus the council on local priorities and demonstrate that the voices of residents matter.
The people of this district are watching. On Monday 6th July, councillors have a choice: continue with a policy that many residents reject, or do the right thing by voting to withdraw from the City and District of Sanctuary network.
Put local people first. Vote to withdraw.
