New Weight-Loss Tablet Approved as Community Pharmacies Prepare for Growing Demand

A new tablet version of one of the world’s most popular weight-loss medications has been approved for use in the UK, potentially opening the door to greater access for patients seeking support with obesity and weight management.

The treatment, developed by Novo Nordisk, contains semaglutide — the same active ingredient found in the injectable Wegovy medication that has become increasingly popular across the UK and Ireland in recent years.

Unlike existing injectable treatments, the newly approved medication is taken once daily as a tablet, offering patients a needle-free alternative.

The approval is being viewed as a significant development in obesity care, with healthcare professionals suggesting the new formulation may appeal to people who are reluctant to begin injectable treatment.

Initially, the medication will only be available through private prescription and is expected to reach the market within weeks. A decision on NHS availability has not yet been made and will depend on future assessments regarding cost-effectiveness and patient benefit.

The development is likely to be closely watched by community pharmacies across Northern Ireland, where demand for weight management services continues to increase.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI), which regulates pharmacists, pharmacies and pharmacy technicians throughout Northern Ireland, has consistently highlighted the important role pharmacy teams play in supporting patients with medicines management, lifestyle advice and long-term health conditions.

Obesity remains one of the most significant public health challenges facing the UK. Health experts link excess weight to a range of serious conditions including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and certain cancers.

Clinical studies of the tablet formulation found participants achieved significant weight loss when the medication was used alongside dietary and lifestyle changes.

Healthcare professionals have welcomed the arrival of an additional treatment option, arguing that increased choice can help improve engagement and long-term outcomes for patients.

With demand for weight-loss medications continuing to grow, community pharmacies are expected to play a key role in patient education, medication counselling and ongoing support as new treatments become available.

Further developments are expected in the weight management sector later this year, with other pharmaceutical manufacturers also progressing tablet-based alternatives to existing injectable treatments.

As obesity services continue to evolve, healthcare providers across Northern Ireland will be watching closely to see how the introduction of oral weight-loss treatments impacts patient access, demand and future service delivery.
