Aontú Deputy Leader Gemma Brolly: “Fuel Crisis Supports Don’t Go Far Enough – Most Will Get No Help”

Aontú representative for East Derry Gemma Brolly has criticised the fuel crisis support package, saying: “It’s not acceptable how the vast majority who need it will get no help.”

Brolly – Aontú’s deputy leader – said: “Our inability to meaningfully tackle the cost of fuel in the North of Ireland highlights a democratic deficit.

“Fuel duty and VAT – which make up an enormous part of the cost of fuel – are determined by a UK Labour Government. None of the politicians making these decisions even contest elections on our island.

“At Aontú, we believe politicians elected locally on our island -Nationalist, Unionist and other – are capable of making these decisions. We feel these powers should be devolved to the Northern six counties.

“Notwithstanding, even with the limited powers of Stormont we feel more can be done. Everyone is affected by the cost of fuel, yet any non-pensioner earning over £30,000 will receive zero assistance. This is not acceptable and while some relief is welcome, it doesn’t go far enough.

“The vast majority of people will receive no help. Everyone is feeling the cost of living squeeze and measures should be put in place to help those who do not meet this arbitrary criteria. Aontú calls on Stormont to recognise the shortcomings of their proposals and we believe fuel duty should be a devolved power. Through democratic empowerment we place ourselves in a much better position to help those struggling during the cost of living crisis.”
