SDLP Opposition Infrastructure Spokesperson Justin McNulty MLA has said a decision to freeze Translink fares does not go far enough.
The Infrastructure Minister has announced a fare freeze for this year.
Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty said:
“This is an unambitious move from the Minister at a time when we are seeing a huge increase in fuel costs at a time of great economic uncertainty. The SDLP has called on the Minister to work with Executive colleagues to explore reduced public transport fares at this time of crisis and this is yet another missed opportunity for a meaningful intervention.
“Increased public transport use is important not only for the current difficult moment, but in encouraging more people to leave their cars at home, reduce emissions and help tackle the climate crisis. While progress in this area is welcome, there is still some way to go to change our culture and get more people onto public transport.
“This is another example of the Executive failing to respond to the moment with the action required. Those who rely on public transport are already paying too much and this was a chance to deliver real support while encouraging greater use of our transport network.”
