Sinn Féin Councillor Cathal King has welcomed the Council’s decision to progress his motion exploring the use of solar-powered CCTV cameras to tackle illegal dumping.
Speaking after the motion passed at the Sustainability and Environment Committee, Councillor King said fly-tipping continues to damage communities across Newry, Mourne, Down and South Armagh.
“Illegal dumping harms our environment and leaves ratepayers picking up the bill. People are fed up seeing the same sites targeted again and again.
“I welcome the positive response from Council and the Environment Department. There is now agreement that stronger deterrence and smarter enforcement are needed.
Councillor King noted that similar measures in Co. Louth have already delivered enforcement results.
“This is practical, proven and worth pursuing here.”
Councillor King confirmed that officers will now develop a feasibility study and business case, and that Council will write to the DAERA Minister seeking support and available funding.
“This is about real action. I look forward to seeing this move quickly from decision to delivery,” he concluded.”
