McNulty: Potholes Must Be Fixed, Not Just Mapped

SDLP Opposition Infrastructure Spokesperson Justin McNulty MLA has said a new road mapping exercise does not go far enough to deliver improvements to the North’s roads.

He was speaking after the Infrastructure Minister published a draft Road Maintenance Strategy that includes digital road surveys to identify issues.

Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty said:

“Everyone in the North is already well aware of the desperate state of our roads. Over the past few years things have deteriorated, with more and more potholes and other damage caused to our roads that have been left half repaired or not repaired at all. This leads to vehicles being damaged and increases the risk of injury for both drivers and pedestrians.

“The success of this new road mapping system will be measured by results. I have a number of questions I will be putting to the Minister and her department about how it will work and how success will be measured. The problem is not identifying the problem, the problem is fixing the problem. It’s no good investing in monitoring systems if the Minister continues to say she doesn’t have the money to fix our roads.

“Any measure that will actually improve our roads is to be welcomed, but we are used to this Executive bringing forth strategies, plans and proposals that generate good content and little else. It’s not enough taking photos or scanning potholes, we need to see them fixed.”
