Sinn Féin MP Dáire Hughes has welcomed cross-party support endorsing the findings of the 2021-22 all-island joint census report.
It found an increase in the island’s population, reaching 7.1 million, the highest since 1851, as well as thousands of workers travelling cross-border for work.
The Newry and Armagh MP said:
“Censuses help us better understand our island, its people and new trends, informing government policy and the delivery of stronger public services.
“I welcome the Assembly’s endorsement of this census, which highlights the rise in our population, the increase in cross-border travel for work and the growth of our thriving all-island economy.
“As this census shows, Ireland as a whole is growing, with the results reflecting ongoing positive changes in our society and communities.
“Executive departments must now take stock of these findings and use them to inform the delivery of improved services and policies for workers and families in all parts of Ireland.”
