Newry BID has announced a programme of events to celebrate Halloween in the city centre. ‘Spooks in the City’ will run from Saturday 26 October to Saturday 1 November with activities for families, shoppers and the night-time economy.
Highlights include storytelling in Newry Library, a pumpkin trail across local shops, live music from Ceev, and Ghost Tours and spooky street theatre from the Newpoint Players.
Families can enjoy an inclusive sing and sign spooky style, facepainting and a children’s disco in Buttercrane. The BID’s costumed promo team, the ‘Spook Squad’, will also be out on the streets handing out sweets and vouchers.
Bars across the city are joining in with a collaborative fancy dress music night on Saturday 26 October. Bars and hospitality outlets across Newry are hosting the city’s largest ever fancy-dress competition. Simply dress up on Saturday 26th October and go to any of the participating bars from 9pm. There will be prizes in all venues with the winners going forward as finalists for Newry BID’s Best Fancy Dress. The venue will take a photo of their winner; followers on BID’s Facebook page will get to vote for their favourite with the winner picking up at £250 voucher prize package.
Other highlights include a prize for Best Dressed at Newry Parkrun on Saturday 25th October and a Best Dressed Owner Dog Walk on Friday 31st October at 10am in aid of the USPCA.
Local businesses are also being encouraged to take part in a Halloween Window Dressing Competition. Newry Twilight Market will return from 5pm to 10pm on Friday 31st October with spooky fun for all the family brought by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
Eamonn Connolly, Newry BID Manager, said:
“Halloween is always a popular time in Newry and this year’s ‘Spooks in the City’ will bring fun for all ages. We are delighted to work with local businesses, performers and partners to create a safe, lively atmosphere in the city centre. From families enjoying the pumpkin trail to people heading into town for a night out, there will be something for everyone.”
The full programme will be promoted on Newry BID’s social media channels and website newry.com in the run-up to Halloween.
