The SDLP Council Group has reaffirmed its strong support for the full redevelopment of the Kilbroney pitches in Rostrevor, standing with local clubs, families, and campaigners who have fought for years for adequate sporting facilities.
Speaking after Monday night’s meeting of the Active and Healthy Communities Committee, Councillor Doire Finn said:
“The people of Rostrevor have waited far too long for sporting facilities that meet the needs of their community. Local clubs, families and campaigners – including the inspirational St Bronagh’s GAA for All team – have been crystal clear: this redevelopment must go ahead without further delay. Any move to abandon or dilute this scheme would be a betrayal of those who have worked tirelessly to secure fair and equal treatment for their children. The SDLP will continue to stand with them every step of the way.”
Local SDLP Councillor Declan McAteer added his support, saying:
“As a councillor for the area, I know how important these pitches are to Rostrevor and to the wider community. Rostrevor, with it’s unique environmental status is a place where development is not easily achieved, given the range of planning policies to be addressed. This costly process is difficult for the Rostrevor Clubs to bear. It’s my belief that Council should shoulder the costs and endeavour to complete the project it commenced in 2021. A watered down scheme would be seen as an insult to Rostrevor and it’s inhabitants. Sport is about inclusion, health, and opportunity – and it’s only right that our children and young people have facilities that reflect their ambitions. The SDLP Council team is fully behind the redevelopment and we will keep pressing until this project is delivered.”
The SDLP Council Group emphasised that the redevelopment is not just an investment in pitches, but an investment in the community’s future, health, and equality of opportunity.
