Kimmins Praises Community Solidarity at Baton of Hope Event In Newry

Sinn Féin MLA Liz Kimmins has praised the Baton of Hope event held in Newry yesterday evening, commending PIPS, the organisers, local groups, and the wider community for their powerful show of support and solidarity.

“Yesterday’s Baton of Hope walk through Newry was a deeply moving and inspiring event that brought people together in a shared commitment to tackling suicide and supporting mental health.

“I want to pay tribute to PIPS, the Baton of Hope organisers, and everyone who gave their time, energy, and compassion to make this event such a success. Their continued work is making a real and lasting difference in raising awareness and saving lives in our communities.

“Suicide continues to have a devastating impact on families across the North, particularly in areas like ours. That’s why events like this are so important – they remind us that no one has to face their struggles alone and that together, we can offer hope, support, and solidarity.

“I especially want to acknowledge the incredible contribution of our young people, local schools, and volunteers. Their participation, commitment, and leadership were truly inspiring, and they should be very proud of the role they played.

“Thanks also to the local venues, community organisations, and support services who opened their doors and helped to create a welcoming, inclusive space for people to gather, reflect, and connect.

“To everyone who came out – whether to walk, support, or simply stand in solidarity – thank you. Your presence sent a powerful message: that this community stands united in care, remembrance, and action.

“Sinn Féin remains fully committed to working alongside PIPS and all community groups to improve mental health services, support families in crisis, and ensure no one is left behind.

“Newry showed once again what true community spirit looks like – united, compassionate, and full of hope for the future.”
