Mayobridge FC have been stripped of their Carnbane League Division 1 league title and disqualified from the Kehoe Kars Bessbrook Cup, having fielded an ineligible player in both competitions.
A spokesperson from the Carnbane League clarified the situation after the news came to light on Saturday evening.
The spokesperson said: ‘The points deduction against Mayobridge was for playing a player in nine winning League games whose registration was deemed invalid and therefore ineligible to play. They were also disqualified from the Bessbrook Cup competition. It was a similar scenario to the Greenfield Park case.’
Mayobridge and Greenfield Park had finished in the top two positions in Division 1 and were set to be promoted to the Premier Division for next season.
Now Orchard United are the Division 1 champions and Ashgrove Rovers will go up in second place.
Both Mayobridge and Greenfield will drop down the table.
