12-day extravaganza brings science to life with hundreds of events across Northern Ireland
NI Science Festival has officially launched its 2025 programme and will make its way to the Newry area as part of a 12-day extravaganza that will bring science to life with hundreds of events across Northern Ireland from 12th – 23rd February.
Established in 2014, NI Science Festival has grown to become the largest celebration of its kind on the island of Ireland and one of the leading science festivals in Europe.
For its 11th edition, the festival will present more than 300 events across Northern Ireland, focusing on our rich and diverse natural environment, our engineering and manufacturing heritage, sustainability, technology, the mind and body, and much more.
NI Science Festival director Sarah Jones said: “The NI Science Festival is a celebration of science, creativity, and the world around us, designed to be engaging and enjoyable for everyone. Over 12 days, the festival will pop up in venues across Northern Ireland, showcasing the incredible work of local researchers and scientists alongside some well-known guest speakers. This year’s programme is packed with exciting events for all ages, offering something for everyone. It’s an opportunity to embrace the joy of discovery, explore the power of ideas, and celebrate the possibilities science brings to our everyday lives.”
Moneydarragh Hub will present a special screening of Fire of Love, a breathtaking documentary that follows the extraordinary lives of volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft on Thursday 13th February.
If you’re up for some wildlife and forest challenges, join a team of nature buffs for art, games and fun activities that will show you all need to know about the wildlife of Slieve Gullion in Wild About Slieve Gullion on Saturday 15th February. Earth Scientists from Geology Rocks will also lead hikes to the summit of Slieve Gullion on Sunday 16th and Sunday 23rd February where you’ll explore groundbreaking geology, ancient myths, and 5,000-year-old archaeology.
From the Rocky Mountain Centre join Earth and Eros for a Valentine’s adventure combining science, myth, and nature. Hike beautiful trails in the Western Mournes, discovering the intricate beauty of the landscape with expert guides. Test your aim with archery, evoking Cupid’s arrow and the spirit of Eros, before gathering for a campfire cooking experience.
A Look at the Stars, A Step Back Through Time is an opportunity to hike into the dark centre of the Mournes and see the night sky as you never have before. On Thursday 13th and Thursday 20th February walk through the mountain tracks under the cover of darkness and stop for stories, ranging from the ancient Greeks, to the Celts, right up to the modern day.
