Nicola Grant Workers Party Spokesperson has indicated that residents have approached her about the proposed new housing development on Watsons Road in Newry. She said it is raising significant concerns within the community particularly with regards to the impact it will have on local infrastructure and services. While Lotus Homes claim the project will have a minimal impact on traffic, those residents who use Doran’s Hill, Chancellors Road and the surrounding areas know the reality is vastly different.
Traffic congestion has become an ongoing problem, with gridlock outside St Malachys Primary School being just one example of the existing strain on our roads. Residents fear that any additional traffic will exacerbate the situation making it more difficult for residents and parents in Newry to navigate these areas safely.
Nicola continued this development is also highlighting a much wider problem, as our schools, healthcare services and public amenities are already stretched to breaking point. Where is the investment in infrastructure to support the increase in population that will come with such a development. The workers party is now seeking answers to the following questions. Are there plans for the provision of new school places, enhanced medical facilities, additional ambulance cover and improved public transport?
The Department for Infrastructure and Newry Mourne and Down District Council need to provide clear answers on how they intend to cope with the increased demand this development will generate. In addition, there is the broader question of social responsibility. Is there any provision for public and affordable housing within this development? If not, why not? Newry is facing a housing shortage that is fast becoming a crisis, it is therefore essential that any new housing development contributes to addressing not only housing needs but also housing inequalities. Lotus Homes cannot simply profit from our community without giving back in a meaningful way.
Nicola concluded by calling on all locally Elected Representatives to support The Workers Party in our call for the Department for Infrastructure to urgently review this planning application and to then engage with residents. The residents quite rightly believe that there
are significant issues about the ability for roads and other services to cope with this new development. It is now time for proper planning and total transparency. Action not empty promises is now urgently required.
