Community Restorative Justice Say Camlough Police Incident Brought Unity to Community

On Sunday, a significant event took place in Camlough village that has brought immense joy and a sense of unity to the people of South Armagh. A PSNI vehicle was seen driving through the village, displaying an Armagh flag, joining the community in celebrating Armagh’s GAA victory in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final.  CRJ Newry/Armagh as the main conduit between community and promotion of modern policing, support this spontaneous celebration within this new dispensation.

The unique moment of the celebration was more than just a display of acknowledgement; it was also a powerful symbol of community spirit and empowerment which marks a positive sign of the times within this era of community policing.  One observer told CRJ, ‘Those 30 seconds of outreach have done more to build trust and camaraderie than many efforts over the past 30 years.’

In 2019, South Armagh was wrongfully portrayed as a dangerous area when PSNI officers posed for a Christmas Day photo with telescopic high-powered rifles. In contrast, last weekend’s celebrations showcased the true spirit of South Armagh and its community police presence—one that knows its community and desires to be an integral part of it.

The Gaelic Athletic Association embodies the true spirit of inclusivity in sporting and cultural activities that are accessible to everyone. CRJ Newry / Armagh in our ongoing role as conduit between all communities, including the GAA and the local Neighbourhood Policing Teams, continuously advocate the importance of relationship building in the area.  Sunday’s well-meaning gesture by the PSNI reflects this new sense of relationship building and is a symbolic, spontaneous example of modern policing in South Armagh.
