Newry City SDLP Councillor Killian Feehan has praised the leadership of the police officer involved in the viral video taken in Camlough during the Armagh All Ireland celebrations.
Speaking from his social media Cllr Feehan:
“On Sunday night, PSNI officers in Camlough joined in the celebrations following Armagh’s All-Ireland triumph. The power of that image is massive and the progress it represents is incredible.
But unfortunately, progress isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Predictably, but depressingly, there was a backlash from certain quarters. Some said the police officers showed bias and lacked integrity. I think they extended the hand of friendship to local people in a moment of joy. Some people have said an officer’s driving was reckless. I think that someone trained for high speed pursuits is more than fit for a lap of a mini roundabout.”
“The reality is that the police officers in Camlough on Sunday night demonstrated a leadership that is painfully lacking in quarters of our politics. Some parties thrive on division, but ordinary people don’t. If we are serious about building a normal society, then we need to stop the ridiculous reactions and pantomime performances in our politics.
Armagh won the All-Ireland on Sunday. That is cause for celebration, not consternation. A community policing team shared in our joy. Those officers deserve commendations, not an investigation.”
“At tonight’s meeting of our local Policing and Community Safety Partnership, I asked our committee to recognise the powerful contribution those police officers made to local confidence in policing. I’m pleased that it received enough support to pass. We should all work together to defend common sense and promote progress.”
