Sinn Féin Councillor Aidan Mathers, has called on Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to develop a robust car parking strategy for the city centre.
The Newry representative said;
“These are exciting times for Newry. We have a number of fantastic projects being progressed locally that have the potential to transform our city centre.
These projects include our City Centre Park, new Theatre and Arts Complex and our new Civic Centre.”
Cllr. Mathers continued;
“We are aware of some concerns and speculation in relation to local car parking.
As it stands no decision has been made in relation to the key sites being discussed.
The elected representative said that there was a need to develop a robust car parking strategy for the City
“Sinn Féin acknowledges the need for a good quantity of car parking spaces in our city centre, especially for workers, shoppers and worshippers at our various places of worship.
It is with that in mind that we are calling on the Council to develop a robust car parking strategy for our city centre.
This needs to identify new sites, explore all options and provide adequate parking for workers, shoppers and worshippers”.
The Councillor concluded,
“We will be tabling a motion to that effect and hope to secure the support of full council.
We will also keep pushing the Council to work with government departments, businesses and others to develop this strategy, which is key to Newry’s economic development.”
