Sinn Féin councillor Oonagh Magennis has welcomed the clear opposition by farmers to the punitive TB proposals from the British Government.
The Slieve Gullion councillor said:
“I welcome the results of the DAERA consultation, showing a clear opposition to the British government proposals to reduce bTB compensation to farmers in the north.
“Under these proposals, the level of compensation a farmer would receive, initially to 90%, followed by a reduction to 75% of the animals market value 12 months later.
“These were punitive proposals that would only heap more pressure on farmers who are already dealing with a range of challenges.
“I commend all those who responded to the consultation and made their voice heard on these proposals.
“This level of response sends a clear message to the minister and to the British government that they must work with farmers to tackle issues around bTB in a way that is both fair and sustainable.”
