SDLP MLA Justin McNulty has renewed his and his party’s solidarity with hard-pressed public sector workers who were forced into strike action on Thursday.
“It was incredible to see the solidarity between striking workers and all the unions in Newry, Armagh and across the North today. Our towns and cities came to a standstill as workers poured onto the streets in freezing conditions to fight for their long-overdue and well-deserved pay rise. Outside Hospitals, Schools, Colleges, Bus Stations and Depots, workers stood together resolutely and determined to ensure their message will be heard loud and clear by both the DUP and the Secretary of State who dangled this pay rise in front of them before Christmas, only to leave staff standing in the cold.
“The strike action has highlighted just how reliant we are on our public sector workers and that can’t be lost on Chris Heaton-Harris and Jeffrey Donaldson. The DUP cannot be let off the hook for their role in denying staff fair pay and proper conditions, and if they do continue to boycott Stormont, the British government must step in and do the right thing for hard working staff and their families who have been left struggling and earning far less than their counterparts across these islands. The only sea border we should be worried about is the pay border in the Irish Sea.”
