Sinn Féin MLA Liz Kimmins has insisted that no local businesses or homeowners should be left behind in accessing flood relief funding to help them recover from the flooding that took place late last year.
The Newry and Armagh MLA said:
“Despite the initial small grants provided to residential and business devastated by the flooding last October, and promises of a second phase of funding, many of these people are still awaiting confirmation on what additional assistance will be available to help their recovery.
“I have been working with a number of people, including families who are still out of their homes and businesses who remain closed with little to no help in covering these costs.
“Before Christmas, I met with senior officials from Dept for Economy and Communities with my Sinn Féin colleagues and made it explicitly clear that both homeowners and businesses must be given adequate support.
“Sinn Féin will continue to press Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, as well as The Departments for Economy and Communities to ensure that no one is left behind by any forthcoming scheme and that the independent review commissioned by council is completed at the earliest possible stage to ensure everything possible is done to avoid such disastrous flooding again.”
