Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has called for a joined up approach to deliver a strategy to manage water levels in Camlough lake to help protect against future flooding.
The Newry and Armagh MLA spoke after a meeting with local residents and NI water at Camlough lake.
Conor Murphy said:
“Ensuring local homes and businesses are protected from future flooding must be a priority.
“Councillors Oonagh Magennis, Declan Murphy and I joined local residents in meeting NI water to ask how water levels in the lake can be better managed to help prevent future flooding locally.
“During the flooding last month, a number of homes on the Newtown road were flooded, leaving many residents understandably concerned.
“As climate change makes heavy flooding more and more common, it’s vital that local communities have proper protection from the immense damage this can cause.
“We have now secured a meeting of NI Water, Rivers agency and the council on the 19th of January to move this forward and press for a strategy to properly and safely manage water levels in the lake.
“We will continue working with the community and departments to press for a solution to help protect the community from future flooding.”
