Sinn Féin councillor Aoife Finnegan has called on a united approach to tackle road safety issues in Newtownhamilton.
The Slieve Gullion councillor said:
“After a number of incidents recently, local people are understandably concerned about the road safety in the village.
“These incidents include a drunk driver losing control of their car, badly damaging the fence near someone’s home and two cars colliding just outside one of the local schools.
“These incidents were in the heart of the community, near people’s homes and where local children go to school.
“This year has seen the worst numbers of road deaths in over six years and the community here have felt that pain all too recently.
“We need to see a united approach to help improve road safety in Newtownhamilton, with investment from DFI needed to improve the safety and quality of our roads and for the Police to ensure they are proactive in tackling dangerous driving in our communities.
“We need an Executive in place to invest in our public services, giving them the resources they need to deliver investment into communities crying out for support. “
