Sinn Féin councillor Geraldine Kearns has hailed the unlocking of £16.2M in funding for the Newry City park project.
The Newry City councillor said:
“Today is a great day as the £16.2 million in funding that was allocated for the project by my colleague, Conor Murphy MLA as Finance Minister, is now available to spend, along with a further £2.4 million from the council.
“The council have said that this money will fully fund the development of phase one of the park, which included play areas, events spaces and many other amenities.
“A temporary events space, funded by £220,000 from the Department of Communities was also opened today.
“This space will allow the community to use part of the site in the time ahead until the park is completed.
“With the £16.2 million now in hand, the council must press forward in delivering this exciting and ambitious project and build a first class park for the people of Newry City.
“People across Newry and beyond are understandably excited to see this project completed and Sinn Féin will continue to work with everyone in seeing this park built to help transform Newry City Centre.
