Sinn Féin councillor Cathal King has welcomed the passing of a motion calling for an immediate ceasefire to stop the bombing and blockade of Gaza.
The Newry City councillor said:
“I welcome support for a motion calling for an immediate ceasefire to stop the devastating loss of life in Gaza and access to urgent humanitarian aid.
“Day after day we hear of the horror emanating from Gaza, the unimaginable pain, suffering and death, a deliberately enforced tragedy made worse by the Israeli military’s desire to inflict more pain, more suffering.
“A whole population denied the most basic of human rights by the Israeli Government, defenceless civilians targeted, no proper access to water, food, medicine, and electricity and communications with access to the outside world repeatedly being cut.
“Our message is clear; stop the bombing of Gaza. Stop the blockade of Gaza. Stop the occupation, illegal settlements and apartheid.
“While the Israel government continues to defy calls for a ceasefire and pursues collective punishment, the international community and the Irish government must now take action to enforce international law.
“All efforts must focus on immediate ceasefires, dialogue and a negotiations process that can deliver a just and lasting peace in the Middle East based upon the creation of a viable Palestinian state.”
