Newry SDLP Councillor has called for more assistance from the government as rising fuel costs put a further squeeze on already struggling local families.
He said: “Fuel prices have crept up steadily over the summer months and with back to school just around the corner this is adding an additional burden to families who are really struggling with the cost of living crisis.
“It is not just families on low incomes or benefits who are hurting, working families on middle incomes are already being squeezed by mortgage rates spiralling and everyone is finding it so hard to make ends meet.
“We are heading into a tough winter and the increase in fuel costs will only make things more difficult. We need additional supports for families and we need our Executive back up and running to provide those much needed support to families.
“There is also a real need now for mortgage relief for families to ease the burden so that they can cope with rising fuel costs and other household bills such as food shopping that continue to rise.
“Action needs to be taken and a vital first step is the restoration of our Executive to make key decisions to help struggling families.”
