McNulty: No Time For Back-Slapping, We Need to See Progress on Albert Basin Park!

SDLP Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has said that whilst £16.2m in funding announced in 2021 for Phase 1 of the Albert Basin Park project is welcome, there is no room for complacency.

Mr. McNulty said the Park had the potential to be transformational for the city.

Newry & Armagh MLA Mr McNulty said: “It’s good that we are finally seeing some progress on the Albert Basin Park project some six years after it was agreed, but it is important that political parties resist the urge to pat themselves on the back when the Park is already so far behind schedule. What is important now is that work gets underway as soon as possible and that all Councillors knuckle down and work together to ensure that a world-class Park is delivered for Newry.

“Progress on the Albert Basin Park has been frustratingly slow. The funding that was provided two years ago enables work to start on Phase 1 of the Park, but if we want to see the full potential of this project realised, we can’t rest on our laurels, we need Councillors to stand united in fighting for further funding to realise the vision of campaigners and the community.

Newry City SDLP Councillor Doire Finn said: “Newry is the only city on our island that does not have a park in its centre. The redevelopment of the Albert Basin site will put that right; it will enhance the lives of everyone who lives here and it will make Newry a more attractive place to visit.

“The SDLP’s commitment to the delivery of the Albert Basin Park is long standing and absolute. We welcomed the funding announcement when it was made 2 years ago, but rather than re-welcome that funding announcement, I think it’s key that all parties fix their focus on progressing the Albert Basin Park Project at pace. That’s what the people of Newry have asked for, and we need to ensure that’s what they get.”
