Jackie Coade Alliance Constituency Representative for Newry and Armagh has written to Infrastructure Minister calling for speed restrictions on the main road outside the park entrance. This call follows the continuing problems raised by the Council and the PSNI. There is a critical need for action
In the letter to the Minister, Jackie Coade states
‘I have been contacted by several residents recently regarding the ongoing parking problem on the main Armagh to Newry road just outside the Forest Park. The situation has been exacerbated due to the number of people using the park for exercise during the current lockdown. After going to the park myself and observing the situation at Gosford myself, it is quite clear it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident and my fear is this will involve many of the young families parking on the main road.
The situation is deeply concerning and I don’t want this to be a situation where we all say …it’s a shame nothing was done’.Whilst I understand Gosford is included in the Capital plan, my concern is the work is not due to start until next year. I am therefore appealing to you and your Department to intervene and place a speed restriction of 30mph on the approach to the park from before the Mullabrack Road (A78) junction and the Tandragee Road (B3) on the main Armagh to Newry road before there is a serious accident. Regularly, forty-foot lorries hurtle past the entrance to Gosford at excessive speed which would take your breath away.’
Jackie Coade goes on to point out that this restriction would also reduce the chances of accidents at the busy junctions north and south of Markethill on the A 28. It is important that we are able to take action before there is a tragedy.
