Sinn Féin MP Dáire Hughes has called on the British government to bring forward a package of measures immediately to help people facing rising energy bills, especially home heating oil.
The Newry and Armagh MP was speaking after a meeting with British government ministers from the Treasury and Department of Energy.
“Due to the reckless war in the Middle East, energy bills have spiralled, placing huge pressure on already stretched workers and families,” said the Newry and Armagh MP.
“I pressed the British government to urgently introduce a package of support for households and small businesses.
“Over 62% of homes in the north use oil. That is considerably more than in Britain and means workers and families here are at greater risk to the huge price increases we have seen in recent weeks.
“The cost of living continues to cause real concern for many people and we must do everything we can to support those who are struggling.”
