McNulty: Clarity Needed From Infrastructure Minister on Residents’ Parking Zones

SDLP Opposition Infrastructure Spokesperson Justin McNulty MLA has challenged Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins to provide clarity on the timeline for delivering Residents’ Parking Zones.

The Minister has announced that her department will roll out a scheme enabling residents to apply for the establishment of residential parking zones in their area to address the frustrations of local people who cannot access parking close to their homes.

Mr McNulty welcomed the potential of the scheme to ease parking pressures but questioned when communities could realistically expect to see these zones introduced after applying.

Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty said:

“In our constituency of Newry and Armagh, many residents in areas such as Boat Street and Monaghan Row in Newry, Derrybeg and Gantry Lane near the train station, Green Road in Bessbrook, and Windmill Avenue, Castle Street and Edward Street in Armagh are at their wits’ end trying to find parking outside their homes.

“Progress on a pathway for the introduction of residents’ parking schemes is welcome. However, the process of assessment, consultation and implementation will take time and resources.

“What residents need now is clarity on when these schemes will actually be delivered on the ground. The Minister did not provide specific timelines and that will leave communities who have been waiting for action with further questions.”
