Newry and Downpatrick Prepare for a Day of Colour, Culture and Celebration this St Patrick’s Day

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is preparing to host a packed programme of parades, live entertainment and family-friendly activities on Tuesday 17 March.

From lively traditional music and cultural performances to artisan markets, street entertainment and spectacular parades, residents and visitors alike are invited to enjoy a full afternoon of festivities in both towns as the district celebrates its unique connection as the home of St Patrick.

The St Patrick’s Day parades are a highlight of the district’s events calendar, drawing thousands of visitors each year and bringing a spectacular display of colour, music and creativity to the streets of Newry and Downpatrick.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Philip Campbell said, “St Patrick’s Day is always a very special occasion for our district as the home of St Patrick, bringing people together to celebrate our rich culture, music and traditions. The celebrations also provide a fantastic opportunity for Newry and Downpatrick to showcase their vibrant atmosphere and strong community spirit on one of the busiest and most enjoyable days of the year.

“I would encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the parades and performances, support our local traders and soak up the fantastic atmosphere that makes St Patrick’s Day here so unique.”

In Newry, festivities will take place from 12noon until 4pm, with the St Patrick’s Day parade departing from The Quays at 1pm and making its way through the city centre.

Entertainment will begin from midday at Marcus Square, where audiences can enjoy performances from Clonduff Comhaltas, Dara Hart, The Reillys and The Nooks, bringing a mix of traditional Irish music and lively contemporary sounds to the main stage. The stage will be hosted by local comedian and actor Rozlyn Sheridan, who will help keep the celebrations flowing throughout the afternoon.

Meanwhile at Margaret Square, visitors can experience the atmosphere of a traditional céilí marquee, with performances by the Kilted Dance Troupe followed by music from the Oisín McCann Céilí Band.

Across the city centre there will also be additional live music performances including Casino Dixieland Jazz Band at Buttercrane Shopping Centre, Carroll School of Harp at The Quays Shopping Centre, and Yew Tree Yukes at Newry Variety Market.

Families can enjoy a range of activities throughout the day including street trading, artisan market stalls, family entertainment and funfair rides on Hill Street, while Newry Variety Market will host a special St Patrick’s Day Artisan Market from 11am to 4pm.

In Downpatrick, celebrations will also run from 12noon to 4pm, with the St Patrick’s Day parade departing from the Downshire Estate at 1.30pm.

At St Patrick’s Square, the main stage programme will feature performances from Newcastle Comhaltas, Celtic Storm, Clann Uí hUiginn and Pure Blarney, creating a lively soundtrack for the afternoon’s celebrations.

The town will also host a St Patrick’s Day Artisan Market at Grove Car Park from 11am to 4pm, while families can enjoy arts and crafts, face painting and traditional music at Downpatrick Arts Centre.

Following the parade, visitors can also explore a static display from the Old Downe Car Club at Rathkeltair Car Park, showcasing a range of classic vehicles. To help visitors travel into the town centre, a Park and Ride service will operate from Downpatrick Racecourse.

Accessible and inclusive facilities are also available at both events, including AccessoLoo facilities and sensory sessions and family activities at Newry and Mourne Museum and Down County Museum.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to arrive early, plan their journeys in advance and make a full day of the celebrations.
