Sinn Féin Councillor Aidan Mathers has welcomed the appointment of a contractor, Woodvale Construction, for the new Theatre and Conference Centre, describing it as a major and exciting step forward for Newry City.
Mr Mathers said the announcement reflects sustained work to secure meaningful investment for the city centre.
“This is a really positive moment for Newry. We worked hard to get this major investment over the line, and it’s encouraging to now see the project move from plans into delivery with the appointment of a contractor.
“The regeneration of the Town Hall and the construction of a modern theatre and conference space will provide a modern and welcoming venue that people across the city can enjoy and be proud of.
“Restoring the historic Town Hall while creating a new, multi-functional venue alongside it shows what can be achieved when we invest in our city’s future.”
Councillor Mathers added that the project will deliver real benefits for local people.
“This investment will support jobs, boost activity in the city centre, support our nighttime economy and create new opportunities for arts, culture and community events.
“This is an incredibly exciting step for Newry, and I look forward to seeing work get underway in the months ahead.
“Sinn Féin will continue to play its part in supporting this project through to completion and in working with others to ensure it delivers for all our people and communities.”
