Sinn Féin MP Dáire Hughes Welcomes £8m Investment In Social Housing Retrofits

Sinn Féin MP Dáire Hughes has welcomed the announcement that over £8 million will be invested into upgrading 600 homes across the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon area,

Commenting, the Newry and Armagh MP said:

“I welcome this significant investment by Arbour Housing which will deliver real, tangible improvements for hundreds of families across our area. Upgrading heating systems, improving windows and doors, and installing solar panels will make a meaningful difference to people’s day-to-day lives.

“These upgrades should help cut energy bills, tackle fuel poverty, and ensure tenants are living in warm, secure and energy-efficient homes.

Mr Hughes stressed that far greater action is needed to address the scale of housing need locally.

“Too many are on ever increasing housing waiting lists, homelessness rises, and families are left in prolonged housing stress. This is unacceptable.

“As of June 2025, there were 4,438 applicants on the social housing waiting list in the Newry and Armagh constituency alone. Waiting lists are outgrowing allocations, leaving too many people stuck without the secure housing they need and deserve.

“While this investment is welcome, the Communities Minister must do more to prioritise building social housing.

“Sinn Féin is committed to building more social and affordable homes across the island.”
