Newry Local Policing Team C Section received a report of a hostile male in a local shop, possibly in possession of a weapon. Officers responded swiftly and located the male in the Talbot Street area.
The “weapon” turned out to be a mallet, but that was only the beginning of the incident.
Due to the male’s demeanour and the fact he was carrying an item capable of causing harm, officers carried out checks to ensure everyone inside his home was safe. Thankfully, no one was injured but officers uncovered a substantial cannabis factory inside the property.
The factory has now been fully dismantled and seized. The male was arrested, interviewed, and charged with several offences including Cultivation of Cannabis
and Possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He appeared in court yesterday morning and has been remanded into custody.
Another reminder that what may start as one call can lead to something much bigger. We will continue to take every opportunity to tackle drug supply and usage in the district – whether it’s a hammer, a mallet, or a not-so-secret garden.
