Sinn Féin Councillor Cathal King has welcomed the announcement by Sinn Féin Minister Liz Kimmins confirming over £1 million in investment for active travel and greenway projects, with funding set to directly benefit Newry and its surrounding communities.
Speaking following the Minister’s announcement, Councillor King said the investment builds on the success of the Newry–Omeath Greenway, which has become a valued local asset for people in Newry, supporting daily walking and cycling, improving connectivity, and strengthening links with neighbouring communities across the border.
“This investment recognises the importance of greenways for Newry.
Councillor King continued:
“They support healthier lifestyles, safer travel options and stronger local connectivity. The success of the Newry–Omeath Greenway clearly demonstrates the demand locally, and it is right that focus is now placed on upgrading and enhancing the Newry–Poyntzpass route.
“I commend Minister Kimmins for ensuring that investment reaches Newry and other border communities. This funding will support local businesses, boost tourism and highlight the success of strong cross-border collaboration in delivering all-island infrastructure that benefits our city and surrounding areas.”
