On Thursday, SDLP Justin McNulty MLA filmed a video outside the Newry Train Station calling attention to the dire state of parking available at the station.
Without sufficient parking available, commuters were forced to park on the pavements leading up to the station, preventing pedestrians and busses from safely accessing the station. McNulty said that action must be taken to prioritise safe access to the train station and address the concerns of residents whose drives were blocked by cars in areas surrounding the station.
While McNulty celebrates the uptick in train passengers, he emphasised the need to increase parking to keep up with the demand:
“The Newry Train Station is a victim of its own success…a 40% uplift in terms of rail travellers, but we need to see some kind of parking arrangement put in place to give people safe access to the station and not to annoy neighbours…
“I’ve written to the Minister on this front, hopefully she’ll come up with a viable solution without delay.”
