In a recent Infrastructure Committee meeting, SDLP MLA Justin McNulty called out several private parking companies for sending legalistic threats to people over parking violations.
McNulty highlights how people are put under “extreme pressure and duress” by legalistic communications from the parking companies that “frighten people with unfair levels of fines” and unclear advertisement in car parks.
McNulty questioned the lack of regulation surrounding these parking companies:
“What are the standards they must adhere by? What are the regulations governing these organizations, are these engaged by the Department of Infrastructure? Who has control of regulating them?”
Mr. McNulty has called on the Minister for Infrastructure to take action to “pull the reins in on these organisations,” and explore options to prevent private parking companies from preying on vulnerable community members.
