Sinn Féin Councillor Valerie Harte has called for increased community vigilance following a series of attempted burglaries in Newry, including an incident in the early hours of last night in High Street, where residents confronted an intruder in their home. In a separate incident, a van was broken into, with tools and a wallet stolen on St Clare’s Avenue. Police investigations are ongoing. Thankfully nobody was hurt.
Councillor Harte said:
“I unequivocally condemn these criminal acts. Such incidents undermine the safety and security of our communities.
“I am working closely with the police and local community representatives to ensure effective action is taken. I urge residents to remain vigilant: keep homes and vehicles securely locked, check in on neighbours—particularly the elderly—and report any suspicious activity immediately.
“Anyone with information please bring it forward to the police.”
“Sinn Féin will continue to work with partners to ensure Newry is a safe place for everyone.
