Sinn Féin Councillor Aidan Mathers has said Sinn Féin is playing a leading role in driving forward plans to restore, clean and revitalise the historic Newry Ship Canal.
The project is being advanced as part of a joint initiative between Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, aimed at progressing restoration and regeneration along the historic waterway.
Councillor Mathers said:
“Sinn Féin has consistently called for the canal to be prioritised at council level. These latest developments represent a significant step towards making that a reality.
“My Sinn Féin colleagues and I have been pushing for this initiative, working hard behind the scenes to secure progress on restoration work in recognition of the social, economic and environmental benefits it will bring to our communities.”
The Newry, Mourne and Down Councillor welcomed the joint working approach between both councils and local partners, describing it as a vital step in protecting and realising the canal’s full potential.
“The canal is a unique historic and cultural asset that deserves proper care and investment,” he said.
“Restoring and cleaning it will breathe new life into the area, creating opportunities for tourism and recreation, supporting local businesses and enhancing our shared environment.
Councillor Mathers added:
“We’ve been meeting with stakeholders, officials and residents to discuss issues such as cleaning and restoring the canal and ensuring that many voices are heard as this project moves forward.
“Sinn Féin will continue to lead on this work to protect our heritage and maximise our potential moving forward.”
