Newry: PBP Condemn Local Far Right Terror Campaign

Reports have emerged over this past couple days that through a cross border operation, the Gardaí & PSNI have arrested a pair of men in Laois set about committing a terror attack on a Mosque in Galway. Explosive devices were uncovered in a related operation in Annalong.

This follows a pipe bomb being left at Sinn Féin’s constituency office in Newry a number of weeks ago, alongside audio threats being made to a number of local councillors describing them as “legitimate targets”.

People Before Profit Newry & Armagh Representative Marc Mac Seáin comments:

“It’s beyond shocking to hear far-right groups are plotting terror attacks on minority groups using explosive devices & knives.

“This is a direct consequence of the scapegoating of minority groups such as migrants or LGBTQ+ people which is rampant across our media landscape pushed by those attempting to divide communities.

“It’s not even been a week since a family were almost burnt alive in Drogheda. A family seeking international protection, 4 of which were kids including one 20 day old baby.

“Attempting to murder minority groups will not make our society a better place. Burning down homes will not create more housing. Those acting out a fascist ideology are disgusting patsies of a Billionaire class who want to keep us divided to subvert movements of workers coming together to fight for housing, services, civil & worker rights for all. This right wing alliance does not care about the ~200k empty houses across the island of Ireland, bringing a ban on evicting families, preventing the destruction of our healthcare service on the alter of private profit – Billionaires are dividing us for their own benefit.

“Newry has seen a ramping up by the far-right in attempts to intimidate & threaten those opposed to their bigotry. ‘Locals Only’ type signs have went up in Tandragee, a pig’s head was recently left outside an Indian restaurant in Armagh. Alliance Party HQ had UVF & ‘Kill All Taigs’ graffiti sprayed outside in the past week.

“It’s undeniable there’s a rise in bigotry being pushed through the media. Despite that there stands many more disgusted with that. Even in Newry we must not forget hundreds showed up to counter protest & drown out fascist agitators such as Niall McConnell when they tried to speak for our community.

“We will remain undeterred in fighting for our communities & all those who call them home. Punch up, not down. In the words of James Connolly: we only want the Earth.”
