Grant Slams Rising Food Costs

Nicola Grant Workers Party representative has hit out at the massive rise in food inflation over the past five years. The cost-of-living crisis has left millions of workers and their families struggling to put food on the table, food inflation having risen by 38% over five years, leaving working-class people unable to provide even the most basic necessities for their families without having to visit food banks or community larders.

Earlier this month Tesco, one of the largest supermarket chains, announced massive operating profits that have skyrocketed by 72% according to unite the union General Secretary Sharon Graham, who quite rightly asks how can this be, right? Tesco has been raking in huge profits and paying their shareholders massive dividends on the backs of its customers.

The Workers Party is calling on the government to finally tackle the unfair inflation of grocery prices. That is blatant profiteering at a time when workers struggle to make ends meet, and live pay cheques to pay cheques. Working class people should not have to pay the price for corporate greed. Price gouging must be ended to tackle hunger and need; poverty is rampant while large corporations and their shareholders reap the benefits and accumulate wealth.

If the government is unwilling to tackle unfair food inflation, then they should impose heavy tax penalties on corporations and their shareholders, but curbing this practice of artificially inflating food prices would help those most affected by the cost-of-living crisis.
