McNulty Welcomes Support For Hosting Women’s World Cup

SDLP Opposition Infrastructure Spokesperson Justin McNulty MLA has welcomed moves to bring the 2035 Women’s World Cup to the North.

He said the tournament would encourage a new generation of young women to take up sport and would bring significant benefits to the local economy.

Justin McNulty MLA said:

“Hosting matches in a future Women’s World Cup would be a fantastic opportunity for the North. It would inspire a new generation of girls and young women to get involved in sport and would showcase our people, our passion and our hospitality sector on the world stage.

“We should be doing everything possible to attract major tournaments to these shores. This World Cup would be a bring thousands of visitors to the North with a significant impact for our economy and the SDLP is firmly behind this proposal.

“The benefits of hosting the World Cup are clear for us all to see – that’s why it’s so disappointing that we were unable to get the Euro 2028 over the line due to issues with rebuilding Casement Park. That should focus minds to ensure that we don’t end up in the same position this time around.

“The SDLP wants to see every sport in the North thrive and more young people participating with all of the benefits that brings. We want to see Casement Park built as a priority and whatever steps necessary taken to host the Women’s World Cup so that these events become a regular occurrence and not a once in a generation experience.”
