AONTÚ to Robustly Oppose British Government ‘Digital ID’

Aontú Deputy Leader has reacted to news that the British Government intends to introduce Digital IDs for all adults by branding the idea as unnecessary and dangerous to civil freedoms.

Speaking this afternoon Mrs Brolly said:

“Aontú oppose digital ID cards just as we opposed mandatory vaccine ‘passports’ as a threat to personal freedoms and fundamental rights.

This measure, being floated by Keir Starmer, is principally aimed at protecting his flank against Reform and their criticism of his border policy, but there is not a self-respecting Nationalist or Republican in the North of Ireland who will bear a ‘Britcard’.

This mechanism will not stop people seeking to come to these shores, and will not address cross-border migration on this island – only an Irish Sea Border for people can achieve that, which has been our policy of long standing.

The Assembly must clearly push back against this idea and make it clear that they will not enforce these measures here.  The parties who supported vaccine passports were badly burned when they pushed that measure only for it to be revoked a short time later, they should not make the same mistake again.

For our part, we will stand squarely by those who agree with us that this is a step too far, that our hard-won civil liberties will be at risk as a result of it and that whatever political manoeuvres the British government want to roll out to save their skins that jeopardise our civil freedoms will be resisted on this island.

We call on all political parties to support us in this stand.”
