Sinn Féin Senator Conor Murphy has participated in the visit of a delegation from northern business umbrella group Trade NI to the Oireachtas.
The visit took place on Wednesday 10th September and members of the Trade NI group met with members of the Joint Oireachtas Good Friday Agreement Committee including Sinn Féin Senator Conor Murphy, MPs Dáire Hughes and Cathal Mallaghan and other committee members.
Senator Murphy said;
“This was a significant meeting since Trade NI represents the three largest sectors of industry and the majority of businesses in the north of Ireland – Hospitality Ulster, Manufacturing NI and Retail NI.
“The delegation made a compelling argument for the reopening of the European Union office in Belfast which they demonstrated would be helpful for businesses navigating the changes brought about by the British government decision to leave the EU.
“The European Union is open to working towards this but thus far the British government has refused to engage on this matter.
“I have written to the Tánaiste to ask him to consider this request and I intend to raise it at the upcoming British Irish Parliamentary Association meeting which I will be attending in October.
“This is a common-sense proposition. The people of the north voted to remain in the European Union and it is they who are affected by the British decision to leave. The Tánaiste must support this initiative and use his influence with the British government to ensure that the ability of northern companies to operate is not further hindered by the British government.”
