Speaking following the removal of a number of Pride flags from across Newry the night before, Sinn Féin MP Dáire Hughes strongly condemned the incident, describing it as “a shameful and cowardly act” that stands in direct opposition to the values of inclusion and respect embraced by the people of Newry.
“The removal of these flags sends a hurtful message to the LGBTQ+ community and does not reflect the spirit of our city.
“Newry is a place where inclusion is celebrated – not silenced.
The Newry Armagh MP continued:
“I condemn the removal of Pride flags from across Newry ahead of this weekend’s Pride parade.
“These flags were proudly displayed to promote inclusion, respect, and equality – values that are at the heart of our community. Their removal is a disgraceful act that disrespects not only the LGBTQ+ community, but all those who believe in building a fairer, more inclusive society.
“Pride is a celebration of identity, solidarity, and the ongoing fight for equality. Attempts to silence or erase that visibility will not succeed.
“We stand firmly with the LGBTQ+ community in Newry and beyond. Our city is one of diversity, unity, and pride – and no act of intolerance will change that.”
