Protecting Our Environment Must Continue to be Priority for Executive – Finnegan

Sinn Féin MLA Aoife Finnegan has said protecting our environment and addressing the challenges facing Lough Neagh must continue to be a priority for the Executive.

The party’s environment spokesperson was speaking in response to the recurrence of blue-green algae on the lough

“The presence of blue-green algae on the lough and in our waterways continues to be a challenge, impacting our environment, communities, local tourism and eel fishing,” said Ms Finnegan.

“As the largest lake in Ireland it is a vital natural resource, particularly for the communities that surround it.

“It is important that work continues in implementing the Executive’s Lough Neagh Action Plan to address issues of poor water quality which are impacting the lough.

“We also want to see a Nutrients Action Programme that is workable and involves meaningful engagement with the farming community to ensure issues affecting water quality are addressed.

“It is imperative that the environmental damage to our inland waterways – such as that in Lough Neagh – are addressed, and we are committed to working with others to ensure that happens.”
