McNulty: Executive Must Tackle Barriers to Youth Sport Participation

SDLP Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has called for urgent action from the Northern Ireland Executive to tackle growing inequality in access to sport and physical activity for young people.

He made the call following a meeting with Ulster University to discuss new research which highlights significant barriers—particularly cost and access—for children and adolescents trying to engage in sport.

Justin McNulty MLA said:

“Sport and physical activity are essential for children’s physical, mental and emotional development, but for too many families, sport is becoming a luxury they can’t afford.

“This research confirms what I’ve been hearing in communities across the North: rising costs, patchy provision and a lack of inclusive opportunities are locking too many young people out of the benefits of sport. That’s not acceptable, and it’s time for the Executive to step up.

“There are a number of practical steps the Executive could take to boost access to sports for young people: proper investment in community sports hubs, particularly in disadvantaged areas, a Sports Access Grant Scheme to help low-income families with fees, transport and equipment costs, and an expansion of inclusive sports programmes with targeted funding for children and young people with additional needs.

“This is about more than just sport, it’s about health, wellbeing, confidence, and social connection. Every child, no matter their postcode or background, deserves the chance to play, move and thrive. We need real, practical investment from the Executive to make that happen. It is time for fair play.”
