Sinn Féin MP Dáire Hughes has said the British government must take concrete steps to uphold its international legal obligations and to avoid any complicity in the ongoing illegal occupation and acts of genocide against the Palestinian people.
The Newry and Armagh MP was speaking after adding his name to a letter from MPs to the British government calling for the publication of its response to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Advisory Opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.
“It has been a year since the ICJ delivered its landmark opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
“Despite committing to release a formal response, the British Government has yet to do so. Today, my colleagues, fellow MPs and I have written to demand its immediate publication.
“We are also calling on the British government to take concrete steps to uphold its international legal obligations and to avoid any complicity in the ongoing illegal occupation and acts of genocide against the Palestinian people.
“The British government must not only condemn these violations but also end any form of aid or support that enables Israel’s continued illegal occupation of territories in the region.”
