Palestine activists in Newry have called for a protest on the bridge beside Newry train station in order to mark the anniversary of the disastrous Nakba, which is horrifically being replayed in the modern day.
Nakba Day, observed annually on May 15th, marks the anniversary of the catastrophe in 1948 when over 750,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their homes during the establishment of the Zionist state. More than 500 towns and villages were destroyed. The effects of this mass expulsion are still felt today, with millions of Palestinians living as refugees or under the ongoing occupation and apartheid.
BDS Newry have organised the protest, with IPSC Newry offering support. As part of the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, they oppose the continuing system of apartheid, settler colonialism, and the denial of self-determination to Palestinians.
Marc Mac Seáin IPSC Newry Chair speaking to support the protest states “Zionist weapons & weapons still regularly flow through Irish airports & aerospace. 3 activists were arrested on May Day for breaking into Shannon airport. PBP Councillor Michael Collins passed a motion at Belfast City Council calling on Stormont & Westminster to immediately end arms shipments through Aldergrove. We must keep pressure in place to end our governments’ complicity North & South in the arms trade, remain steadfast in boycotting Zionist goods & see full sanctions brought to bear.”
A National March for Palestine will also take place on Saturday March 17th in Dublin to commemorate Nakba Day.
