SDLP MLA Justin McNulty has described Derramore Woods as one of the local area’s “hidden gems,” following a productive meeting with Maddy Dunlop of the National Trust to discuss key concerns affecting the wooded park.
Following the meeting, McNulty has raised several issues that need urgent attention to ensure the long-term protection and enjoyment of Derramore Woods for local communities and visitors alike.
Speaking after the meeting, Newry & Armagh MLA Justin McNulty said:
“One of the main concerns highlighted was the issue of dog fouling, which is problematic due to a lack of adequate poop a scoop waste collection and disposal facilities. Another major topic of discussion was traffic safety, including incredibly the use of scramblers and quad bikes within the woods, which has caused environmental damage and safety risks for visitors. A number of issues around vandalism and damage to trees, signage and other facilities were also raised.
“I have written to Stormont Ministers on these issues and I am advocating for increased funding, resources, and joined up working, to address the issues that were raised with me and so that the full potential of Derramore Woods can be properly realised.
“Derramore Woods is a wonderful and vital asset to our community, and it’s essential that we take action to nurture and protect it. I will continue working with the National Trust and all the interested groups to address these issues and secure the support needed to make this beautiful space even better for everyone to enjoy.”
