Alleged Sex Offender Claims Lacking Strength to Stop Messaging 14 Yr Old

By Paul Higgins

An alleged pervert allegedly told a 14-year-old girl he could not stop messaging her “until he finds the strength to stop or is convicted,” a court heard today (fri).

Craigavon Magistrates Court also heard claims that 46-year-old Ross Paul Rodwell told the teenage schoolgirl he was trying to set up a website so they could chat and message freely.

The 46-year-old alleged pervert is accused of sexual communication with a child, meeting a child following sexual grooming and possessing an indecent image of a child, all committed between 1 March and 19 October last year.

Objecting to Rodwell being freed on bail, Det. Const. McAreavey told the court how the defendant had previously breached BAIL conditions by contacting the alleged victim and by using internet capable devices.

The detective told Dep. District Judge Philip Mateer that according to the police case, Rodwell told the 14-year-old he was “making plans” to create his own website so they could continue to exchange messages, advising her about a gaming app they could use to keep in contact.

DC McAreavey said he had a copy of a message where Rodwell told the girl “he cannot stop messaging her until he finds the strength to stop or is convicted.”

Rodwell’s defence counsel submitted that with a £1,000 cash surety available.”

Having heard that the PPS expect to have the “full file” by the end of next week, Judge Mateer said he saw no justification to reverse earlier decisions to refuse bail so remanding Rodwell back into custody, he adjourned the case to 23 May.
